Evaluation Part 3

In my part of the Evaluation i answered four questions
1.Who would be the audience for your media product?
2.How did you attract/address your audience?
3.What have you learned about the technologies from the process of constructing this product?
4.Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?

Evaluation Part 2; The best company to distribute our horror film and why

Lionsgate is a very large company and is very well known for distributing many horror films such as the franchise 'Saw', 'Your Next', 'Cabin in the Woods' and many others. This would be an ideal for our film as horror film title shows the basis of the story where tension and suspense is built towards the end of the horror film title. The themes of tension and suspense are evident in the films Lionsgate distribute and so this company would be best to distribute our horror film title.

Evaluation Part 1

This part of the Evaluation was completed by Amara, it includes two questions based on representation, Target audience and Conventions.

1. How our horror film title has a specific target audience who are represented within our media product product. The audience we are targeting fall under the social groups of teenagers and young people?

2.How our media product meets the typical conventions of a horror film title in many different ways?

Health and Safety Form

This Safety form will allow us to stay safe traveling to and from the destinaon and also while out filming in a open area where we've never been before. In this Health and Safety form the hazards, risks and who's at risk have been indentified and also a risk rating has been given for all possible hazards. Its vital and very serious to have a health and safety form prepared before the filming trip as without one us and others could be in danger, and we need to be prepared for if any of the hazards above do happen.

4x Idents Warner Brothers, Walt Disney, Lionsgate (2013), Lionsgate Horror.

This is the Warner Brothers Ident which is 17 seconds long. Its a pretty simple Ident compared to other indents from other film productions, the camera seems to be going through a gold haze showing a number of warehouses. 7 seconds into the ident the Warner Brothers logo is shown clear, it swerves into eye view of the audience. For a good 5 seconds the logo sits there while a animated baby blue clear sky background appears showing fluffy clouds gliding across the sky at minimal speed.

The beginning of the ident of the warehouses might suggest the Warner Brothers past, how they came from a working class family and have made it to multi millionaires from there film production line. The city where them warehouse are located could be even the town the brothers grew up in. The colour gold connotes richness, power and high status, which the brothers are trying to demonstrate from there logo. Also the logo being high up in the clouds far above land, also implies the high status of the company and stating there the best, no one else higher than them.

This second Ident is from Walt Disney in total it lasts for 16 seconds, this Ident is played before all Disney films so its targeting its films audience which is young children. Also many Disney films are based on princesses that live in castles, which the main image which is seen in this Ident is of a castle. In the first 3 seconds its a plain black screen, which in cinemas would cause excitement for its target audience, as the children would know the film is about to begin as the screen goes black. After the black screen the screen turns a dark navvy blue then the famous Walt Disney Logo starts to appear in in a white glowing light, it takes 4 seconds for the whole castle to appear, with a quick beam of light that disappears leaving the writing 'Walt Disney Pictures' in a fancy curly font. After a shooting star shoots over the castle.

Thirdly this new and improved Lionsgate Ident which was produced in 2013, lasts for 23 seconds which is slightly longer than most indents from other production companies.  It begins with a pitch black screen then 2 seconds in theres a beam of light which shines throughout the darkness then speedily glides throughout space showing earth then shows the entire galaxy passing through stars and planets. Then big bold letters showing the word Lionsgate appears out of no where with a star like shadow behind beaming through the middle. The star again which is common in a lot of other production companies Idents, could be connoting the importance of there company and there work. Also the Lionsgate word doesn't appear in the Ident until half way through the clip, far out in the galaxy, perhaps intending to show the audience there hard to reach, as in there hard to beat as there so brilliant. From the point where the production companys name appears its there throughout the rest of the clip till the end, which is 10 seconds from where it first appears, as the Ident is purposely advertising/promoting there company name there intending to show there name for as long as possible.

This is also a Lionsgate Ident which is only for their horror genre type films. The actual Horror Ident doesn't begin till 8 seconds in, although the clip looks like the parts of inside a clock with the machinery dial type objects, its got a non-digetic sound over the top which is very airy and spooky. The red smokey effect in the background makes it that little bit more scary as the colour red connotes blood/death/horror which is quite known from various audiences. The camera looks as if its came throughout the key hole of the big iron gates which actually have two symbols of lions, which you see clearly before the gates open fully. The Lions obviously go with the companies name 'Lionsgate'. The word Lionsgate is hidden behind the iron gates which indicates the importance of the company.

Feedback from original Film Pitch and Amended Film Pitch

This shows our feedback from  fellow AS media students , they've left "WWW's (What Went Well's)" on our Film pitch and "EBI'S (Even Better If's)" for us to construct  improvements   to our film  pitch.

This is part two of the film pitch, the new and improved. From the feedback of our previous film pitch, we saw what our peers liked about our ideas and what they thought we could change to make it better. We took on bored what our peers said and we used there feedback to construct even better ideas to improve our film pitch as a whole. One of our peers advised us to use less difficult props, such as the tent, but this was no problem and we didn't need to change that idea as we already had this prop covered. Also the same feedback about having a more detailed ending came up two or three times so we added more to the ending so them improvements were made.

This is part one of our film pitch where we used the findings of our questionnaire analysis to help us with our ideas and used the preferences from our target audience to provide something more appealing to them as they had specific features of a horror film that interested them.

Questionaire analysis

From this questionaire me and my group had the chance to see which genre our target audience preffered which from our results we can tell the preffered genre is paranormal. So for our horror title we'll involve paranormal features to entertain our target audience in there preferred entertainment. From the second question which asks the preferred theme, the option our questionies preferred was mystery.

Preliminary Task Evaluation Part 1

This part of our evaluation was created by me, it involves how we used media conventions and media language in our preliminary task.

Preliminary Task

For our preliminary task we based it around young teenagers of our own age. We used a classroom in our 6th form which was being used by other students to give it that school vibe and realism. Our storyline was quite dramatic and something you might see in a classic soap like Eastenders, but also the issue is something a lot of teenagers aged 16-18 that attend 6th form could compare to thats why we chose to use a schooling environment. I was the actress in the mini film, so that was my main role in the task also i created a mini script for both me and the other actor. All three of us in the group took part in the editing, the footage which we took had to be cleverly put together so that the match on action was right and the shot reverse shot was clear. The editing i found particulary difficult as using iMovie for the first time was a new experience and didn't have a lot of knowledge of how to use the software. We slowed down the most tense part of the film, where the pregnancy test was thrown on the table. This was designed to cause tension for the audience and for the audience to realise what the pregnancy stick means.

Match on Action

Match on Action definition-
Match on Action is an editing technique used in continuity editing that cuts two alternate views of the same action together at the same moment in the move in order to make it seem uninterrupted.
This allows the same action to be seen from multiple angles without breaking its continuity. It fills out a scene without messing the reality of the time frame of the action.
The next sequence of events continues the film without the viewer being aware that the shots were taken at separate times.
For example a person opening a door and filming can be stopped. The following day filming could be continued as the same person enters a room. The viewer will not be aware that any break has taken place. But you have to make sure the character you are filming is:
         - Wearing the same clothes
         - Appears identical to the previous filming time
         - Lighting  (time of day/weather)
       - Also if person entering on the left they have to leave on the right

This activity we demonstrated a Match on Action Scene. Match on action is an editing technique for continuity editing, this is where one shot cuts to another shot portraying the action of what’s happening in the first shot. This creates continuity, the action carrying through creates a ‘visual bridge’ which draws the viewers’ attention away from slight cutting or continuity issues. It portrays a continuous sense of the same action rather than matching two separate things.

In the match on action activity our scenario was to show action of getting up from a chair and walking away, before the filming begun we sketched a script of where we was going to position the two cameras using tripods for a more affective still professional shot. As this was planned it was much easier to start the filming without the faffing around. The placing of the two cameras was important as we didn’t want to get a shot of the other camera in the scene, also we had two views of the same action which was filmed at the same time.
The simplest part of this activity was the filming, I was expecting the filming to take a few attempts as we wouldn’t of gotten the first shot right or there would have been a few minor errors that would have had to correct in the other shots but surprisingly first attempt we got the shot we needed without any mistakes. The most challenging part of the match on action activity was the editing, combining the two footages together on IMovie was quite difficult as we had troubles uploading the footage onto the computer, this challenge could have been overcome perhaps after a few uploading attempts, just a few more practice’s then it would have been fine. From this activity I learnt how to upload footage from a video camera to IMovie, although this did take some time and effort to get it right.

Demonstrating 180 Degree rule and Shot reverse shot

The 180-degree rule is essential in keeping the viewer focused and avoiding them confusion. Once a scene has been established, the camera must stay on one side of the action. If two people are facing each other, a line must be drawn to mark clear for the actors and camera crew, the line runs straight down the middle between the two people. Now the lines in place the camera can move anywhere as long as it stays on the same side of the line once filming has begun.

Shot reverse shot is a technique where one character is shown looking (often off-screen) at another character, and then the other character is shown looking "back" at the other character. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions, the viewer assumes that they are looking at each other.

The footage demonstrates the 180-degree rule and shot reverse shot, i directed the scenes and also helped edit the footage that we uploaded onto iMovie. I directed the actors on how to gesture there body language right for the scene, told them what facial expressions to use on certain lines and what actions to pursue during the course of the filming. The body language, facial expressions, eye level and body actions are very vital and key as the audience can tell so much from them into what exactly is going on and how a character is feeling. I also helped with the editing, after uploading the footage from the video camera to iMovie.
